There is a Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) COVID-19 walk-in mass testing site in Wichita, inside Chester Lewis Academic Learning Center at 1847 N. Chautauqua St. Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This location uses a 60-second oral swish solution to speed up the collection of saliva samples. The Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) has opened up a new COVID-19 mass testing site in Wichita, KS. The walk-in testing location is located inside Chester Lewis Academic Learning Center at 1847 N. Chautauqua St. It will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can test more than 200 patients per day. This location uses a 60-second oral swish solution to speed up the collection of saliva samples. A PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 is then run at the state public health laboratory in Topeka. Patients are notified of their results by text and email in approximately 48 hours. People looking to get tested can find the site details and pre-register at KnowBeforeYouGoKS.com. Anyone unable to follow the instructions for the oral rinse collection will not be able to get tested at this location.

Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine booster dose can be given at least 6 months after completion of the primary series to individuals:

• 65 years of age and older
  • 18 through 64 years of age at high risk of severe COVID-19
  • 18 through 64 years of age with frequent institutional or occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2

Per CDC guidelines, patients can now “mix and match” COVID-19 vaccines. If you would like to receive a different brand than what you received as your primary series, please schedule on the day of the desired vaccine.

HMC is awaiting additional guidance from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) before offering booster/additional doses of Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccines. We will continue to provide Pfizer-BioNTech booster doses for eligible individuals, as well as Moderna additional (3rd dose) for severely immunocrompromised individuals.

The CDC now recommends a booster dose (3^rd dose) for fully vaccinated individuals who have already received both initial doses (2 doses) of the Pfizer COVID19 vaccine at least 6 months ago.

Health and eligibility requirements include:

• 65 years and older
• 18+ who have underlying medical conditions
• 18+ who work in high-risk settings (healthcare workers)
• 18+ who live in high-risk settings

The CDC still recommends a 3^rd dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals. For eligible immunocompromised people, the CDC recommends individuals receive the same vaccine as previous doses.

Johnson & Johnson vaccination recipients are not eligible for an additional dose at this time.

According to the CDC, individuals considered immunocompromised have:

• Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
• Received an organ transplant and/or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
• Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years, or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
• Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
• Advanced or untreated HIV infection
• Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids, or other drugs, that may suppress your immune response

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued a joint recommendation that all Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID19 vaccinations be placed on pause until they have an opportunity to examine a rare, but potentially significant side effect.  At this point the concern only relates to the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and does not impact either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.    

Consistent with the recommendations of the CDC, FDA and Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Health Ministries Clinic (HMC) will not be providing the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until these concerns have been addressed.
